Automate Grading Open-Ended Questions with AI

At Quizizz, we understand the importance of allowing students to express their understanding creatively. That's why we're thrilled to introduce this AI feature to help you grade open-ended questions!

You can leverage the power of AI to automate grading for open-ended questions. All you need to do is set the subject and grade for the question and add an evaluation criterion, and your AI-powered grading assistant will evaluate student responses based on your input — saving you tons of time!

How it works

Let’s say you are a passionate science teacher and have asked your students to describe the process of photosynthesis. You are excited to read their responses using the open-ended question type on Quizizz. But as the long responses pile up, a familiar dread sets in — the mountain of grading that will steal precious time from your students.

This is where Quizizz AI comes in. As your grading assistant, it will automate evaluating these responses quickly, giving you time to personalize feedback, identify areas of strength and weakness, and facilitate discussions that go beyond rote memorization.

For example, you can set criteria for keywords like "water," "carbon dioxide," "glucose," "sunlight," "chlorophyll," and "oxygen", and Quizizz AI will grade the responses for you based on these evaluation criteria that you have set.

This means you don’t have to spend all your time grading and can spend more time talking and learning with your students!

How to enable it

You can enable and configure this feature while creating or editing an Assessment/Quiz. Here’s how:

1. Create an Assessment/Quiz or select the Assessment/Quiz you want to assign
2. Create a question using the open-ended question type
3. Click on the ‘Enable’ button next to the ‘Evaluate with AI’ option
4. Choose the relevant subject and grade level
5. Provide a few lines as the evaluation criterion detailing what you expect in student responses
   1. You can add certain keywords or a description of how you'd like the AI to evaluate your students
   2. Optionally, use AI to generate evaluation criteria and customize it if needed
      
      
      💜 Quizizz AI is still learning and evolving. In some cases, it may generate inaccurate results. Please ensure you review the content generated before publishing it. 
6. Click on the ‘Save and Enable’ button

This feature will now be enabled for your selected open-ended question!

How to manage Reports and grading

Once your Assessment/Quiz is assigned, you can view the results for each participant in the Assessment/Quiz Report from your Reports page. For graded open-ended questions, you can review the accuracy of the responses based on the evaluation criterion you had set.

You can also edit the evaluation criterion and disable AI evaluation at this stage.

1. Select your report and click on the ‘Questions’ tab
2. Click on the open-ended question to view how Quizizz AI has assessed responses as correct or incorrect for individual participants
   
   
   
   

3. If you want to make changes to the evaluation criteria set for this question, click on ‘Edit Settings’

   • Here, you can modify the evaluation criteria, or

   • You can disable AI evaluation

4. After making the required changes, click on ‘Save Changes’

Additionally, you can modify the points and accuracy of each response if you disagree with the automated evaluation.

1. Click on ‘Edit Points’ next to a response
2. Select the participant response you’d like to modify the grading for
   
   
3. Change the selected points to the desired points
4. Click on ‘Save’
