Common Assessments on Quizizz help educators analyze students’ proficiency in standards at the class, school, and district levels—all within the easy-to-use and engaging Quizizz environment.

Teachers can easily administer and proctor Common Assessments assigned to them and focus on effectively supervising their students during the assessment

In this article, we will discuss how to administer a Common Assessment and use its features to make it a smooth assessment experience.

To learn more, take a look at Common Assessments: An Overview.

Common Assessments are available as an add-on with the Quizizz School & District Plans. To know more, please reach out to sales@quizizz.com.

How to administer a Common Assessment

Once a Common Assessment has been created and distributed by the district administrator, teachers can find the assessment in the following places:

  • Common Assessments page

  • Explore page (from one week prior to its scheduled start date until it ends)

  • Teachers will also receive an email notification about the assigned Common Assessment

Note: Common Assessments can only be administered to your class in the Live Now state (between the start and end times). They cannot be administered if they are in the ‘Scheduled’ or ‘Ended’ states.

Starting the session

  1. Start the assessment: Click on the 'Assign' button from either the Explore page or the Common Assessments page
    1. Choose the class: Select the class you want to give the assessment to
      • Click on 'Next.' This will take you to the assessment lobby, where you can monitor students as they join
      • You can also enable Accommodations for the class students to differentiate the assessment experience according to each student’s needs
  2. Student login: The selected class's logged-in students will be notified to join the assessment. Logged-out students must log in with the correct credentials for the classroom
  3. Begin the assessment: Once all students are in the lobby, click on 'Start' to begin the assessment
    • Late joiners: Students can still join the assessment after it has started, and the teacher can monitor this from the session dashboard

Focus Mode

Students experience Common Assessments in a no-frills full-screen mode to minimize distractions and discourage cheating. Teachers are immediately notified if students exit full screen or switch tabs, which could indicate cheating.

In this case, teachers have the option to remove students from the assessment. Students are also warned when they try to exit the Focus Mode.

Removing students

Teachers can remove students from an ongoing assessment session by clicking on the 'Remove' button located next to the student's name on the live dashboard. This helps mitigate cheating risks, especially if students are joining remotely.

Note: Removed students cannot rejoin the same assessment session. Teachers can administer another assessment session to them later.

Managing the timer

A countdown timer is set for the specified assessment duration:

  • A warning will be issued when 5 minutes remain
  • Teachers can add more time to the timer by clicking on the 'Add Time' button to accommodate in case of disruptions in the classroom

  • The session will end only when all students finish or when you manually end the test (by clicking on the 'End test' button), not automatically at zero on the timer

How to pause & resume a Common Assessment session

Teachers can pause and resume a Common Assessment session for students who need to continue later. This feature is helpful for students who require multiple sessions to complete the assessment or in emergency situations like fire drills.

Follow these steps to pause and resume a session:

  • To pause a session,
    1. Click on the 'Pause test' button located in the top right corner of the live dashboard
    2. Confirm the action by clicking on the 'Yes' button
  • To resume the session,
    1. Go to your Common Assessments page
    2. Locate the session you want to resume and click on the 'View my sessions' button
    3. Click on 'Go to Live Dashboard'
    4. Click on 'Resume test'
  • Students who have not submitted the assessment can then rejoin and continue their progress

Note: Paused Common Assessment sessions will expire either after 15 days or on the scheduled end date of the Common Assessment.

How to set Accommodations for students

Teachers can now differentiate for every student’s needs with Accommodations on Quizizz. Setting accommodations for a Common Assessment is the same as setting Accommodations for any other Quizizz session.

If a student has existing Accommodations and the teacher enables the 'Accommodations' setting when starting a Common Assessment session, those accommodations will also apply to that session.

Note:

  • The 'Accommodations' setting is enabled by default for a Common Assessment session
  • We recommend teachers set up student Accommodations in advance for classes that will be taking the assessment
  • The following Accommodations are not available for Common Assessments:
Redemption Questions, Extra Time for Students, Don’t Show Leaderboard, and Turn Off Sound Effects

Managing Common Assessment sessions

When assigning Common Assessments to classes, you have the flexibility to start the assessment session in multiple ways:

  • Assign makeup assessments: For students who missed the original assessment or require another attempt, assign assessments at a later time within the same class
  • Administer assessments simultaneously across multiple classes: Begin the assessment in multiple classes at the same time.

Teachers can monitor class participation by selecting the relevant assessment on the Common Assessments page and then clicking on the 'View My Sessions' button.

Class statuses are defined as follows:

  1. Ongoing: The assessment is currently active, with student participation. Teachers cannot assign the assessment to this class but can rejoin the live dashboard if they leave the session.
  2. Completed: At least one assessment session has been completed, with at least one student participating. Teachers can assign another assessment session to the relevant students.

How to manage student access to an assigned assessment

Students can only take assessments that have been assigned to a class. Class rosters can be managed in the following ways:

For classes synced from an LMS integration

  1. Add or remove students from your class directly within your Learning Management System (LMS)
  2. Once you've made any changes to the roster on the LMS side, return to Quizizz
  3. Choose the class for which you have updated the roster
  4. Click on 'Manage Class Roster'
  5. After making changes to your LMS roster, click on 'Refresh Roster' to sync the changes

For Quizizz Classes

  1. Log in to your Quizizz account and go to the 'Classes' section.
  2. Select the class roster you wish to manage
  3. Click on 'Manage Class Roster'
    • To remove a student, find their name, and click on the delete icon next to it
    • To add students, click on 'Add Students' and share the provided class join link. Students who log in using this link will automatically be added to the class roster
